Degas' "Man in Top Hat" pin

     Top hats appear in many of the works degas executed around the time of his 1872-73 New Orleans visit. The artist depicted himself and his closest relations to myriad New Orleans settings. Whether pondering business in the cotton office, or lounging about the family’s splendid esplanade Avenue mansion, the men in Degas’ paintings can usually be seen sporting the fashionable top hat.
